How long it takes to climb from Gold to Platinum

Published 28 October 2026 · 7 min read · by the Next Level Boost team

Climbing from Gold IV to Platinum IV takes 400 LP, and how many games that is depends on two numbers: your win rate and your LP per win and loss. With even gains of +22 and -22, it takes about 182 games at a 55 percent win rate and about 91 games at 60 percent. At a 50 percent win rate with even gains, you never get there. The rest of this guide shows the maths so you can plug in your own numbers.

How far Gold to Platinum actually is

Gold has four divisions: IV, III, II and I. Riot says you generally need 100 LP to move up a division, and promotion series were removed in 2023, so hitting 100 LP in Gold I moves you straight into Platinum IV.

Gold IV to Gold III100
Gold III to Gold II100
Gold II to Gold I100
Gold I to Platinum IV100

If you start partway through Gold, subtract what you already have. Gold II at 40 LP is 160 LP away from Platinum.

Platinum IV is the target: 400 LP above Gold IV at 0 LP.

The formula

Every game, your average LP change is:

LP per game = (win rate x LP per win) minus (loss rate x LP per loss)

Then:

Games needed = LP needed / LP per game

Your LP per win and loss come from the gap between your hidden MMR and your rank. Riot says that when MMR is higher than rank you get bigger gains and smaller losses, and the reverse when it is lower. Check your last 10 games in the client to get your real numbers, because they move during the season.

Worked examples

The LP values below are example numbers to show the maths, not official averages. Use your own.

Example 1: even gains, 55 percent win rate

+22 per win, -22 per loss.

0.55 x 22 = 12.1. 0.45 x 22 = 9.9. 12.1 minus 9.9 = 2.2 LP per game.

400 / 2.2 = 181.8, so about 182 games.

Example 2: even gains, 60 percent win rate

0.60 x 22 = 13.2. 0.40 x 22 = 8.8. 13.2 minus 8.8 = 4.4 LP per game.

400 / 4.4 = 90.9, so about 91 games. Five extra points of win rate halves the grind.

Example 3: MMR above your rank, 55 percent

+27 per win, -17 per loss. This is the kind of split you see when your MMR is ahead of your rank.

0.55 x 27 = 14.85. 0.45 x 17 = 7.65. 14.85 minus 7.65 = 7.2 LP per game.

400 / 7.2 = 55.6, so about 56 games.

Example 4: MMR below your rank, 55 percent

+17 per win, -27 per loss.

0.55 x 17 = 9.35. 0.45 x 27 = 12.15. 9.35 minus 12.15 = -2.8 LP per game.

You lose LP on average even while winning more than half your games. You need to win enough to raise your MMR first, then the gains turn around.

Break-even win rate

The win rate where you stop losing ground is: LP per loss / (LP per win + LP per loss).

Games needed at a glance

All rows use 400 LP, Gold IV 0 LP to Platinum IV, with results rounded up.

65%61 games (6.6 per game)35 games (11.6 per game)250 games (1.6 per game)

Two things jump out. Win rate matters more than anything else. And the LP split hides a lot: the same 55 percent win rate can mean 56 games or no progress at all.

Turning games into hours

Riot does not publish an official average game time, so use your own. Check your match history and add a few minutes per game for queue and champion select. If one game plus queue takes you about 40 minutes:

At two hours a night, 61 hours is about a month. 121 hours is about two months.

How to shorten the climb

  1. Raise your win rate first. Moving from 55 to 60 percent cuts the even-gain grind from 182 to 91 games. A tight champion pool in one role does more for this than anything else.
  2. Fix your LP split. If you are on the bad side of the gap, a short win streak raises MMR and improves every game after it. See our guide on how LP gains work for the full reasons.
  3. Take the Aegis of Valor bonus. Since the 2026 ranked update, autofilled games where you earn a mastery score of C or higher give double LP or full loss protection.
  4. Stop after two losses. Tilted games drag win rate down and widen the MMR gap.

If your win rate is stuck near 50 percent, League coaching is the honest fix: a pro reviews your games and shows you what to change. If you want to climb faster while still playing yourself, a duo boost pairs you with one of our pros in your own games.

What about doing it with a booster?

A division boost has a pro from our team play on your account, set to appear offline, with every game tracked in the live order chat. A strong player's higher win rate and better LP split shrink the numbers above a lot. Be aware that playing on someone else's account breaks Riot's Terms of Service, and Riot actively detects and penalises it, so weigh that risk before ordering.
