Rank rating (RR) is the 0 to 100 bar under your Valorant rank. You need 100 RR to move up a tier. How much you gain or lose each match depends mostly on whether you won, then on how decisively you won, how you played, and above all on the gap between your visible rank and your hidden matchmaking rating (MMR). When your MMR is above your rank, wins pay more than losses cost. When it is below, the opposite happens. That gap is why RR gets uneven.
The two numbers behind every rank
Valorant tracks two things at once:
- Rank and RR. What you see: your badge plus a 0 to 100 bar.
- MMR. A hidden skill estimate Riot uses to build fair matches. You never see it.
The system is built so your rank slowly converges on your MMR. RR per game is the tool it uses to get there. If the game thinks you belong higher than your badge, it pushes you up faster. If it thinks you are over-ranked, it pulls you down faster.
What decides RR in a single match
- Win or loss. Riot has said since launch that winning is the most important factor in gaining rank.
- Round margin. Riot measures how decisively you win or lose. A 13-3 win counts for more than a 14-12 win.
- Your own performance. Riot's launch post said individual play matters most early, when the game is still learning your skill, and less once it has a read on you. Playing well below what your past games suggest can cost rank.
- Rank versus MMR. The biggest driver of uneven numbers, covered below.
- Your party. Full five-stacks that ignore normal rank limits get reduced RR.
At the top of the ladder, Riot's original design said only winning and round margin would count. Players on the same team can still receive different amounts of RR, because each of them has a different rank-to-MMR gap.
Why your RR gets uneven
Uneven RR is not random. It tells you something about where the system thinks you belong.
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Big wins, small losses | Your MMR is above your rank. The game wants you higher and is speeding you up. |
| Wins and losses about equal | Your rank and MMR match. You are roughly where you belong. |
| Small wins, big losses | Your MMR is below your rank. The game thinks you are over-ranked, often after a lucky streak. |
The win streak trap
A short hot streak can push your badge past your MMR. RR then turns against you: smaller gains, bigger losses, until the two line up again. Players read this as the game punishing them. It is the system correcting a rank that moved faster than your skill estimate.
Losing to lower-rated lobbies
Matchmaking uses MMR, not your badge, so you can land in a lobby that looks higher or lower than you. Beating a lobby that is rated above you is how your MMR rises. Losing to a lobby rated below you is how it falls. Your next few RR numbers follow from that.
What Riot changed in 2026
Riot has openly admitted the problem. In a 2026 developer update, design director Max Grossman said the team had heard feedback about visible rank gaps in matches and "the feeling that RR losses can outweigh RR gains". Riot said it would change how RR rewards are calculated so the post-game number accounts more for individual performance in both wins and losses. Patch 13.00 then adjusted RR so players who win consistently feel less stuck, with a focus on Immortal and above. Riot has not published the new formula, so nobody outside Riot can give you exact per-game values.

Promotion, demotion and rank shields
Each tier from Iron to Ascendant is a 100 RR step. Hit 100 and you promote. To demote, you have to be at 0 RR and lose again.
Since patch 10.01, Valorant uses rank shields on the first tier of each rank. When you reach a Tier 1, such as Gold 1, you get two shields. A loss at 0 RR uses one shield and keeps you at 0. Once both are gone, the next loss at 0 RR drops you. Winning back above 0 does not refill them.
If your MMR is far above your rank, the game can also skip you past a tier on a promotion. That is rare, but it is the same convergence idea at work.
Immortal and Radiant
Immortal and Radiant still use RR, but the thresholds for moving between them depend on your regional leaderboard rather than a fixed 100 step. Radiant is a set number of top spots per region, so other players climbing can push you out.
Things that cost RR outside the match
- Dodging. Leaving agent select costs RR and a queue timeout.
- AFK and leaving. Repeated AFK behaviour is penalised, on top of losing the game.
- Five-stack outside the range. Allowed, but RR is reduced for everyone in the party.
On the positive side, if a player in your match is later banned for cheating, Riot can refund RR you lost to them. The refund lands after your next completed competitive match.
How to fix a bad RR ratio
- Win more than you lose over a long stretch. That is the only reliable way to lift MMR. A 55% win rate over 50 games does more than any single good night.
- Win decisively. Round margin counts, so do not ease off when you are up.
- Play your role well. Riot is moving towards more performance weighting. Good trades, opening picks and smart utility matter.
- Stop after two losses. Tilt drags your performance below what your past games predict, which is what costs extra RR.
- Do not stack wildly. Queue inside normal rank limits to avoid the RR penalty.
Some players get help breaking a bad ratio. With Valorant net wins, a pro plays a set number of games and only wins count towards the order, which is usually the fastest way to lift MMR. If you would rather play yourself, a duo boost puts a pro in your party so your own account climbs with you on it. Keep in mind that account sharing breaks Riot's terms of service.
For a full climb to a target rank, the Valorant rank boost page shows the options. Each order runs with a live order chat and every game is tracked.
Quick answers
How much RR do you need to rank up in Valorant?
100 RR per tier from Iron to Ascendant. Immortal and Radiant use leaderboard thresholds instead of a fixed step.
Why do I gain less RR than I lose?
Your hidden MMR is below your visible rank, often after a win streak. The game shrinks gains and grows losses until the two line up.
Does performance affect RR in Valorant?
Yes. Winning matters most, but round margin and your own play also count, and Riot said in 2026 it would weight individual performance more.
What are rank shields in Valorant?
Two shields you get on reaching Tier 1 of a rank. Each one blocks a demotion when you lose at 0 RR. They were added in patch 10.01.
Does Valorant RR decay?
No. Rank is hidden after a long break but not lowered. At Immortal and Radiant, you can still slide on the leaderboard while others climb.
