TFT ranked has ten tiers from Iron to Challenger. Iron through Diamond each have four divisions of 100 LP. Every game, finishing in the top 4 of 8 gains LP and finishing 5th to 8th loses LP. How much you gain or lose depends on your placement and your hidden MMR. You play 5 placement games at the start of each set, then the ladder works on LP alone, with no promotion series.
The TFT ranked tiers
TFT uses the same tier names as League of Legends. Riot's ranked FAQ lists them from Iron to Challenger.
| Tier | Divisions | How you move up |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Bronze | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Silver | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Gold | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Platinum | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Emerald | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Diamond | IV to I | 100 LP per division |
| Master | None | LP keeps stacking |
| Grandmaster | None | LP cutoff on your region's ladder |
| Challenger | None | LP cutoff on your region's ladder |
Promotion is automatic. Riot's own example: an Iron II player at 90 LP who gains 30 LP becomes Iron I at 20 LP. Leftover LP carries over and there is no promo series.

How placements turn into LP
A TFT lobby has 8 players, so every game you finish somewhere from 1st to 8th. Riot's rule is simple:
- 1st to 4th: you cannot lose LP.
- 5th to 8th: you cannot gain LP.
Inside those halves, the better your finish, the more you gain, and the worse your finish, the more you lose. First place pays the most. Eighth costs the most.
We do not list exact LP per placement here. Riot does not publish a fixed table, because the values shift with your MMR the same way they do in League. If your hidden MMR is higher than your rank, gains are larger and losses smaller. If it is lower, the reverse. The direction is always toward where the game thinks you belong.
Why top 4 matters more than wins
Because 4th still gains LP, a consistent top 4 player climbs even without many 1st places. The players who climb fastest are rarely the ones forcing risky wins. They are the ones who almost never go bottom 4. Saving a bad game from 6th into 4th turns a loss into a gain, which is often worth more than turning a 2nd into a 1st.
Placement games and the season reset
Each new set starts with a soft reset that pulls everyone's MMR toward the middle.
- You play 5 placement games. Riot's FAQ says these have accelerated gains of up to 100 LP each and no LP loss.
- Your starting point depends on last set's rank. Riot's FAQ gives a range of Iron II to Bronze IV. For Set 17 (patch 17.1), the reset range was reported as Iron II to Silver IV, so the exact range can change from set to set.
- Riot says a set's ranked season usually lasts about four months, though this can change.
Because bottom 4 costs nothing during placements, those 5 games are the cheapest time to practise new comps on ranked.
Demotion
You only drop when you are at 0 LP and finish bottom 4. According to Riot's ranked FAQ:
- Players in Iron through Master are not demoted to a lower tier. You can still drop a division inside the same tier.
- Grandmaster and Challenger can be demoted.
- Demotion happens when your MMR is too low for your rank and you are at 0 LP.
Decay at Master and above
Ranks below Master never decay. From Master up, Riot's FAQ describes a bank of up to 14 games, with one banked game used per day. If your bank is empty, you lose LP each day: 50 at Master, 150 at Grandmaster and 250 at Challenger. Decay cannot drop you out of Master.
Other TFT queues
Double Up
Double Up is a two-player team mode with its own rating, separate from your solo rank. Riot's FAQ says Double Up pairs can queue together regardless of rank.
Hyper Roll
Hyper Roll uses a separate rating with coloured tiers instead of Iron to Challenger. Its rating does not affect your standard ranked LP.
Climbing faster in TFT ranked
- Aim for top 4 every game. Consistency wins the ladder. Avoid forcing a single comp when your shops do not support it.
- Manage your economy. Interest and streaks decide how strong your board is late. Bottom 4 finishes often come from rolling down too early.
- Learn three or four flexible comps per set. Knowing when to pivot keeps you out of 7th and 8th.
- Use placements well. No LP loss for 5 games means you can test openers safely.
If you want feedback on your own games, our TFT coaching reviews your boards, economy and pivots with a high ranked player. If you only need a specific number of strong finishes, TFT top 4 wins are priced per game. And if a new set has just reset, TFT placements can be played for you.
A rank boost means a pro from our team plays on your account with appear offline on, and every game is tracked in the live order chat. Account sharing breaks Riot's Terms of Service, so there is always some risk of a penalty. We will not pretend otherwise.
