The fastest way to raise Hunter Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds is to push the story until the HR cap is lifted, then chain side missions and Investigations on the highest star and tempered monsters you can beat, using SOS flares or co-op to cut hunt times. HR points you earn while capped are not lost: they are stored and added once the story raises the cap. This guide covers the game as of 29 October 2026, after the title updates that added HR 100 content.
How Hunter Rank works
Hunter Rank is an account level, not a stat boost. It does not give you more health, stamina or damage. What it does is unlock harder quests, new monsters and event content, which in turn lead to better gear.
- You earn HR points by slaying or capturing large monsters and by completing quests and missions. Harder monsters, higher star ratings and tempered monsters give more.
- The story caps HR. During the campaign your rank stops at certain points until you clear the next story step. Points earned over the cap are banked and paid out when it lifts.
- The cap lifts after the story. Once you finish the final chapter, HR rises freely.
HR milestones that matter
| Hunter Rank | What it opens |
|---|---|
| Rising during chapter 4 onward | Later story assignments ask for a minimum HR |
| HR 40 | Needed to finish the story, and tempered monsters become available |
| HR 50 | Arch-Tempered quests, such as Arch-Tempered Rey Dau, now a permanent quest |
| HR 100 | 10-star content added in the February 2026 update, and the Gogmazios quest from Title Update 4 |
Exact HR gates for each story step have shifted between guides and patches, so check the quest board if a number here does not match your game.
Step 1: clear the story first
Story quests give a large chunk of HR and, more importantly, raise the cap. Farming hard before the cap lifts is not wasted, because points are banked, but the story is still the quickest path to HR 40. If a story assignment is locked behind a rank, do side missions until you meet it, then go straight back to the story.
Step 2: side missions on top of hunts
Side missions from NPCs with a yellow icon are the best HR value during and after the story. You earn HR three times on one mission:
- for slaying or capturing the monster,
- for completing the mission,
- and again when you report back to the NPC.
With SOS flares calling in AI support, many of these take 5 to 12 minutes. Always check camps for new NPC requests after a story step.

Step 3: Investigations and tempered hunts
After the story, most HR comes from repeatable hunts:
- Investigations. Saved hunts you can replay and share with other players. Keep a stock of ones with tempered or high-star targets.
- Tempered monsters. Bigger, stronger versions that award extra points. Hunt them in co-op if solo attempts keep carting.
- Arch-Tempered and 10-star quests. Once you reach HR 50 and HR 100, these are the hardest hunts in the game and give the most for your time if your gear can handle them.
Speed tips
- Use SOS flares and join others. Four hunters kill much faster than one, and joining another player's SOS still gives you HR.
- Capture when you can. Capturing counts like a kill and usually ends the hunt sooner.
- Bring a build for the target. Matching element and weakness shortens hunts more than any HR trick.
- Do not farm low-star monsters past the early game. Their HR is small compared with tempered hunts.
- Stack side missions. If two NPC requests share a monster, take both before you leave camp.
How long it takes
Reaching HR 40 usually takes somewhere around 20 to 35 hours from a fresh save, depending on your experience and whether you play solo or in co-op. Beyond that there is no fixed number, because HR per hunt depends on the monsters you pick. HR 100 for the newest content is a long grind for most players.
Help with Hunter Rank
If you want to reach HR 50 or HR 100 for Arch-Tempered or 10-star content, our MH Wilds Hunter Rank service raises your HR to the number you pick. If the story itself is what stops you, the story campaign service finishes it on your save. For a single hard monster where you want to stay in the quest yourself, monster hunts brings a pro into your hunt.
On piloted orders, a pro plays on your account and you follow progress in the live order chat. You can get a refund before work starts. Sharing your account goes against platform terms on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox, so a piloted order carries real account risk. A co-op hunt where you stay in control does not need your login.
