The Pit of the Artificers is Diablo 4's timed endgame ladder and the main way to level Paragon glyphs. You unlock it at the end of the early endgame, open it at the Artificer's Obelisk, then have 15 minutes to kill enough monsters to summon a Pit Guardian and beat it. Clear in time and you get glyph upgrade attempts and access to higher tiers, up to tier 150. This guide is written for Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, which launched with patch 3.2.1 on 15 September 2026.
How to unlock the Pit
| Realm | How it unlocks |
|---|---|
| Seasonal | Complete the capstone dungeon Hellish Descent, which you reach at Season Rank II. |
| Eternal | Reach character level 70. |
Once it is open, go to the Artificer's Obelisk in Cerrigar to choose a tier and start a run. If you are still getting a seasonal character to that point, leveling 1-70 gets you there quickly.
How a Pit run works
- Pick a tier. You can start any tier you have unlocked. There are 150.
- Fill the progress bar. Kill monsters across the floors. Elites and progress orbs fill it faster.
- Summon the Guardian. When the bar is full, the boss spawns. The boss is chosen at random from a shared list, and the fight is usually the longest part of the run.
- Beat the clock. Kill the Guardian inside the 15 minute limit. Fail and you get no upgrade attempts.
Clearing a tier unlocks the next one. Clearing with a lot of time left can unlock several tiers at once, so a fast build skips the slow middle part of the ladder.
Glyph upgrades: the real reason to run the Pit
In Season 15, glyph leveling sits in the Pit. Nightmare Dungeons no longer give glyph experience. Every successful clear gives you a set of upgrade attempts that you spend on any glyphs you own.
- Base attempts. A clear grants several upgrade attempts, with an extra one for finishing without dying.
- War Plans. Pit nodes in your War Plan can add more attempts per clear.
- Glyph cap. Glyphs go up to rank 150.
- Legendary glyphs. At rank 50, a glyph needs 15,000 gem fragments to become Legendary at rank 51.

How upgrade chance works
Each attempt's success chance depends on the gap between the Pit tier you cleared and the rank of the glyph. Clear a tier at least 10 above a glyph's rank and the upgrade is guaranteed. Below that, the chance falls as the gap shrinks, and once a glyph's rank is well above the tier, attempts almost never succeed. Clearing far above a glyph's rank can also award more than one rank from a single attempt.
That has one clear lesson: level your glyphs in order of the tier you can clear. Spend attempts on low glyphs while you are pushing, and only feed the top glyph once you can comfortably clear well above it.
War Plan nodes worth knowing
- Choron's Blessing adds an upgrade attempt on completion. Paired with a high-rank Splinter of Hatred, it also counts the run as a higher tier for upgrade chance.
- Choron's Haste gives extra attempts based on how much time you have left.
- Choron's Soul boosts experience. Patch 3.2.1 doubled experience from progress orbs while it is active.
What changed in Season 15
- Splinter link. This season's Prime Evil splinters are tied to activities. Mephisto's splinter covers the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons.
- More experience. Patch 3.2.1 raised bonus experience at higher tiers. Tier 150 went from 1800% to 2700%.
- Survival Mastery. Glyph upgrade rewards are now correctly reduced when you fail Survival Mastery objectives, so dying costs more than time.
- Protective barrier fix. The barrier after a Guardian kill was fixed so it appears reliably.
Choosing the right tier
The best tier is the highest one you can clear with time to spare and without dying. A failed run gives nothing, and a death costs both time and your no-death bonus. A reliable clear 10 tiers above your glyphs is worth more than a coin-flip attempt at a big number.
Some quick checks before you push:
- Temper and masterwork your gear first. Power from gear matters more than any single glyph rank.
- Plan for the boss, not just the floors. Many runs fail because the bar fills fast but the Guardian takes too long.
- Run a few tiers below your limit when you only want upgrade attempts. Speed and safety win there.
- Push Paragon alongside glyphs. Paragon leveling and a high Pit tier feed each other.
Getting Pit help
Pit help can be a carry where you join our player's party, or piloted, where a pro plays on your account with appear offline while you watch progress in the live order chat. Piloting uses account sharing, which breaks Blizzard's terms of service, so the party option is the lower-risk choice. Every clear is tracked and you can get a refund before work starts.
To push a target tier or level glyphs, see the Diablo 4 Pit service.
