Deadlock ranks explained

Published 29 October 2026 · 7 min read · by the Next Level Boost team

Deadlock has 11 ranks: Initiate, Seeker, Acolyte, Sentinel, Mystic, Ritualist, Emissary, Oracle, Phantom, Ascendant and Eternus. Each one has six subranks, I to VI. Since Valve's matchmaking update on July 30, 2026, Ranked is a separate mode that unlocks after 60 Standard wins, starts with 8 solo placement matches, and moves you up and down with rank points after every game. This guide covers how the current system works, what changed from the old one, and when the season ends. It is checked against reporting on Valve's posts up to late October 2026.

Before you finish placements you show the Obscurus badge. It is not a rank, just the uncalibrated state.

If you played in 2024, some names will be new. The old ladder had Alchemist, Arcanist and Archon. Those are gone, and Acolyte, Sentinel and Mystic now fill the lower middle.

How to unlock ranked

The July 2026 update split matchmaking into Standard and Ranked. Standard has no rank and no party limits. To queue Ranked you need:

For a new player that is a real grind, since only wins count. Our Deadlock ranked unlock service plays Standard matches until the requirement is met.

Placement matches

Every season starts with 8 placement matches. They can only be played solo, not in a party. The best rank you can get from placements is Oracle. Phantom, Ascendant and Eternus have to be earned in normal ranked games.

Oracle is the ceiling for placements. Everything above it is earned one game at a time.

Rank points and promotion

After placements, every ranked game adds or removes rank points. The amounts are reported as follows:

Points per game shift with the result, your win streak and what the matchmaker expected. Valve does not show a fixed number per win, so we do not give one here. Your post-match screen shows the change after every game.

Loss protection

When you reach a new full rank, you get some breathing room. TheGamer's walkthrough of the update shows that a player at Sentinel I can lose up to five games before dropping to Acolyte VI. Smaller protection applies at subrank boundaries, but we could not confirm the exact count from a second source.

Party rules

Ranked is solo or duo only. Duo partners need to be close in rank, and the rules are stricter at the very top for Eternus players. Valve said party rules may change as it tests the mode. Standard has no limits and lets you queue with up to five friends.

Placements are always solo, so a duo partner can only join you once you have a rank.

Season dates and resets

The first ranked season began on July 30, 2026. Valve first set the end for October 7, then on October 6 moved it to Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 2pm Pacific, with the next season starting right after. Ranks reset with the new season, so everyone plays 8 new placements. Your highest rank of the season is saved to your rank history.

Valve has said later seasons will probably be longer and may include splits.

Climbing in Deadlock

Deadlock rewards people who play a small hero pool well. Since you need 15 wins on any hero you bring to Ranked, pick two or three and stick with them. Focus on souls per minute in lane, and on objectives over kills once the mid game starts.

If you want help, there are three ways to do it. A Deadlock duo boost puts a pro in your duo so you climb on your own account, which is the lower-risk option. Deadlock coaching covers laning, souls and team fights by the hour. A Deadlock rank boost has a pro play your ranked games with appear offline on. Be honest with yourself about the risk: sharing an account breaks Steam's terms, and no service can promise it is completely safe. Every game is tracked, and you can follow along in the live order chat.

All options are on the Deadlock boosting page.
